Ivys want to see that you’re actively involved in after school extracurriculars. They are looking for students who are eager to take part in the campus life and show they are willing to give back to the college in their own, unique way. Extracurriculars show that students have more depth to them, are socially capable, and have no problem taking on extra responsibility. Joining school clubs indicates that you are willing to take the initiative and have interests in a wide array of subjects. Impressive SAT scores and straight A’s are great, but what you do with your own time makes you more interesting.
Write a killer admissions essay.

It gives admissions officers a good indication of how you think, communicate, and can render a clear picture of who you are. This may sound relatively obvious, but frequently visiting the school can help bump your application to the top of the stack. Remember that millions of people are dying to attend an Ivy, so that means you have to determine what will make you stick out. We recommend taking a tour, getting to know some of the admissions officers, and perhaps sitting in on a few classes. Anything you can do to show strong academic interest is a plus.
Ace the interview.
When you go in for an interview, make sure you’re prepared to put your best foot forward. Try to relax when you get there and know that being yourself is the only way you are going to be successful. Having an understanding of the campus culture is also important so you can discuss how your interests and motivations align with the mission of the school. Try to dress well, but don’t overdo it. Business-casual attire will suffice. Once you leave, make sure you follow up with a thank you note and mention a few notable points from your discussion. This goes a long way.
